Summer Sense

We all love a sunny dry summer but there are some very important things to remember for your pets as we move through the hottest part of our year.
  • Never leave your pet in a car during Summer - even with the windows down temperatures inside can escalate incredibly fast leading to heat stroke and in the worst cases death.
  • Exercise your pet in the early morning or later in the evening when its cooler.. Remember if the pavement is too hot for you to keep your palm on it for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your pups paws. Always carry water on your travels.
  • Be super mindful of our pets that are senior, overweight, young or brachycephalic (short muzzled) as they have an increased risk to overheating.
  • Make sure your pets have access to shade if they are outdoors and always have multiple water sources available. A kiddies paddling pool is often a great idea - obviously water safety rules apply if there are littlies around!
  • Indoor fans or air conditioning can be a great help for our indoor pets.
  • Ice cubes in the water bowls help (even my chokies get an ice cream container of ice in their drinking water at this time of the year). Try making up some cooling iced treats or stuffed frozen Kongs, these are often most appreciated in the heat of the day.
  • There are some great cooling mats available, being also super handy for car trips .
  • Feed in the cooler part of the day and add water to their food, especially kibble fed pets. A lovely addition is bone broth nutritious and hydrating!
  • For our pets with white or pink noses /ears /belly's an animal sunscreen such as Filtabac is essential, just as we can, pets can get skin cancers as they age too.
  • Caged birds also appreciate a light misting of water or a bird bath and make sure the cage is in the shade in a well ventilated area.
  • Most of these rules apply to all animals, from Guinea Pigs to Horses and yes perhaps even the Goldfish!
  • So keep cool, stay hydrated and have a safe and happy Summer!
